About Us

Save the Children has been working in Thailand since 1984. Over the past 30 years, we have worked to deliver lasting changes for children in Thailand and across the Mekong delta.

With a thriving economy, Thailand has been a popular destination for migration from neighboring countries. According to official government records, there are over a million foreign migrant workers in Thailand, mostly from Lao, Cambodia and Myanmar. This number is a gross underestimation as it does not include the number of dependents and those who enter the country for short-term work. Thailand is also a safe haven for ethnic refugees from Myanmar, housing nearly 85,000 people along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Thailand has ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child since 1992. The report submitted to the Committee on the Rights of the Child in 2012 shows positive development of child and child’s right protection. However, challenges remain on the protection of child migrants, and the establishment of effective child protection mechanism and implementation to ensure that all children enjoy full rights to survival, development, protection, and participation.

Save the Children supports the development of policies that help fulfil children’s rights as laid out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly for migrant, refugee and ethnic minority children. Save the Children is also one of the leading responders in humanitarian crises, supporting children and their families who are caught up in disasters and conflict, working towards lasting peace and resilience in disaster-prone areas.
